Selene, now debt free and thriving 

Selene’s story

As a young adult, Selene had many hopes and dreams and was ready to step into God’s plan for her life. However, poverty quickly stole those plans away when she was thrown into debt. At a time when she should have been planning and dreaming for her future, Selene was forced into a desperate cycle of borrowing just to survive.

Then Selene’s granddad passed away. She moved in with her grandma to keep her company and to process the loss together – but the stress of the debts continued to mount.

Then her grandma died unexpectedly, and Selene was made redundant. Drowning in grief, she couldn’t afford to see friends or even drive to church. Instead of building a future, Selene was struggling to afford three meals a day.

I was totally defeated, on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I needed help.

Thanks to generous supporters like you, Selene’s local church was able to step in with face-to-face, whole person support. A spark of hope ignited in Selene – maybe this was the answer she’d been praying for.

The amazing team at St Peter’s Church walked with Selene over the next few years, celebrating with her when she became debt free in 2013. When she fell back into debt, the church offered Selene money coaching workshops, equipping her with vital financial education skills that have helped Selene manage her money with confidence ever since.

Thirteen years on, thanks to generous supporters like you, Selene has been able to buy her own flat, and is passing on her wisdom to her younger family members.
