At CAP we don’t want to just treat the symptoms of poverty; we also want to address the causes. That’s why we’re working tirelessly behind the scenes to shape and influence the policies that affect our clients. It means we get to speak on behalf of the vulnerable to the people with the power to change their lives. And our voice is growing louder.
Industry professionals seek our opinion on current issues, and our recommendations get heard in Parliament. Change is happening. Below are some of the ways in which we are fighting for justice amongst the country’s key decision-makers.

CAP are proud to support the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute’s (MMHPI) campaign ‘Stop the Charge’. People in debt crisis who have mental health problems are being charged by their doctors for the medical evidence they need to send to their creditors. MMHPI’s campaign aims to tackle the issue by working with GPs and government across the UK to find a practical solution. We know from our 20 years of experience working with those in financial difficulty that debt and mental help are meticulously intertwined. In fact, one third of our clients thought about or attempted suicide as a way out of their debt problems. We therefore read the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute’s (MMHPI) consultation paper with great interest. The consultation paper explores the six primary psychological drivers of increased spending, as well as offering potential remedies, which we were able to provide comment on. For the first time, CAP had an exhibition stand at both the Labour and Conservative Party conferences. We were able to meet with many MPs and councillors to discuss important topics such as financial exclusion and fuel poverty. The conferences proved to be an excellent opportunity to inform politicians about CAP’s great work in their constituency and to encourage MPs to support us. We had a great response and there was definite recognition for the need of our services across the nation. We were also able to meet key Ministers for Energy and the Department of Work and Pensions, amongst others.

Dawn Stobart, CAP’s Director of External Affairs, joined Ofgem, E.ON and Citizens Advice on a panel to discuss SMART meters and vulnerability at the UK’s biggest Utilities and Telecoms Conference. Following the recent launch of our Poor Pay More campaign, we were able to share our insights on how to identify vulnerability and the impacts SMART meters would have on vulnerable customers, specifically around warrant visits, self-disconnection and how the implementation will change the nature of debt collections.

Ofgem are consulting on the implement of the Competition and Market Authority’s (CMA) recommendations following the CMA’s two-year investigation into the energy market. Ofgem are also proposing to move to a principles based model of regulation. We have responded to this consultation to echo the importance of consumers being able to make informed choices and highlighting that specific attention needs to be given to the ability of those on prepayment meters to do so. We also raised our concerns that the opportunity to fully consider wider consumer wellbeing as part of this investigation has been missed. Read our full response below.Read the full document here
