Policy and Government

At CAP we don’t want to just treat the symptoms of poverty; we also want to address the causes. That’s why we’re working tirelessly behind the scenes to shape and influence the policies that affect our clients. It means we get to speak on behalf of the vulnerable to the people with the power to change their lives. And our voice is growing louder.

Industry professionals seek our opinion on current issues, and our recommendations get heard in Parliament. Change is happening. Below are some of the ways in which we are fighting for justice amongst the country’s key decision-makers.

The new Standard Financial Statement

The Money Advice Service has proposed for a Standard Financial Statement to be use across the debt advice sector. CAP welcomes this proposal and has submitted a response to help make sure it works well for clients, debt advisers and creditors. Financial Capability Strategy for the UK

The Money Advice Service is consulting on their strategy to improve financial capability in the UK. This strategy aims to optimise financial wellbeing through enabling and encouraging positive financial behaviours. CAP is pleased to support the strategy’s development, and is already actively pursuing this aim, as the largest face-to-face provider of financial education in the UK and a key debt management provider.

We estimate that over 300,000 people in the UK are too poor to go bankrupt. This report outlines the problems faced by CAP's insolvency clients and our proposed change, which would create a solution to poverty and unmanageable debt for 465 people a day.
