UK Chief Executive Paula Stringer shares her thoughts on what Jesus can do with our actions.

At the start of the year, we shared with you our exciting vision of transformed lives, thriving churches and an end to UK poverty. I’m delighted to say we’ve been able to take steps forward already and will continue to do so with your support.

So far this year, we’ve met with MPs to talk about what needs to be done locally and across the whole of the UK, and equipped more churches to deliver CAP services. We’ve seen hundreds of lives turned around practically and spiritually, and that’s barely scratching the surface. Your generosity, your prayers and your passion are constantly setting off ripples of tangible change.

In the Bible, we see the disciples in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by thousands of people with growling stomachs, and only five loaves of bread and two fish to feed them all. I’d imagine they felt pretty useless in that moment, because what they had to offer wasn’t nearly enough. How on earth would they give so many people what they urgently needed? Of course, what Jesus did next is a well-told miracle.

Taking the five loaves and two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Matthew 14:19–21

I often have to remind myself that it’s not my actions that matter, but what Jesus can do with those actions. He only asks that we do what we can, give what we can, care as much as we can, and he will do the rest. Jesus fed in excess of five thousand people with a few loaves of bread… imagine what he’s capable of doing with that donation you make, or that conversation you have with a friend, or that letter you write to your local MP. CAP’s vision is his vision, and we can be certain that he will make a way.

Doing your bit doesn’t necessarily mean giving financially. One of the exciting things about this issue of Lifted is that it offers you a variety of different invitations to get involved. You could make change happen by encouraging your church to book in a CAP Speaker, or by taking on a fundraising challenge. You could pray with us, or simply spread the word.

As we head into the second half of 2022 and continue to pursue a big vision, let’s keep the momentum going. And whatever you do, please know that Jesus can and will do amazing things with your generosity.
