CAP welcomes Northern Ireland Energy Price Guarantee but flags concern about heating oil users being left out in the cold.

Christians Against Poverty (CAP), has welcomed today’s Government announcement of the extension of the recent Energy Price Guarantee, to include gas and electricity users in Northern Ireland, as well as to churches and businesses across the UK.

Following the Government’s original price guarantee announcement on 8 September which covered England, Scotland and Wales, today’s Northern Ireland Energy Price Guarantee will offer the same level of support to gas and electricity users there.

A comment from our Senior Policy Manager, Rachel Gregory

We are pleased to see the Government announce help for households in Northern Ireland, an area which hasn’t benefited from the energy bill support so far. The Northern Ireland Energy Price Guarantee will now limit typical’ bills to £2,500 a year and all households will receive a £400 discount on energy bills this winter.

However, uniquely in the UK, almost 70 percent of households in Northern Ireland use heating oil for their homes and they will only receive an extra £100 payment to help with these costs. This falls far short of the support given to households on gas. CAP is asking the Government to give this further consideration, as our concern is that thousands of families across Northern Ireland will still be left out in the cold this winter.

CAP has also welcomed the extension of the energy guarantee to churches, many of which will be pivotal in providing places of welcome throughout the winter via the Warm Welcome Hubs initiative, of which CAP is a part.

Oil customers who are electricity consumers also, will get the £400 energy bill rebate because that’s applied to electricity bills. However, the separate £100 payment for oil does not match the equivalent support that people will be receiving on their gas heating bills through the energy price guarantee.
