Paul’s story

When Tanya (pictured above) answered Paul’s call to Christians Against Poverty’s free helpline, she could hear the hopelessness in his voice.

The soaring cost of living had pushed him and his wife, Heather, into debt. A third of Paul’s wages were being automatically deducted to cover Council Tax repayments, leaving the family fighting to survive on very little income. They hadn’t been able to afford gas and electricity in months.

On top of all of this, Heather was recovering from a cancer operation. It was all too much for Paul. The Wednesday before he called, he had tried to end his life. Thankfully, Paul is still with us today and was able to contact CAP after picking up a leaflet when he went to give blood.

Tanya was able to book an appointment for a local team to visit Paul and Heather, and they’re now debt free!

With the support of their church, they’ve reached a place where they’re able to thrive, not just survive. But Paul’s phone call was one of hundreds that we receive on the helpline every day.

Thank God, Paul is still with us today. I’m delighted to say that, with the support of their church, Paul and Heather have reached a place where they’re able to thrive, not just survive. But Paul’s phone call was one of hundreds that we receive on the helpline every day.

As poverty creeps into more and more households across the UK, God is calling his Church to fight back. To make sure people receive the support and compassion they need to turn their life around. To bring the light of Jesus into homes that have grown dark. To play our part in ending UK poverty for good.

Will you follow God’s call to see people like Paul released from debt and poverty, with a gift to CAP today?
