Andy Burnham is now the UK’s new Prime Minister following the resignation of Sir Keir Starmer but how should we respond to this news as Christians?
At CAP we acknowledge that being Prime Minister, or even just working in politics, is a huge responsibility for anyone and we continue to pray for every MP from all political parties.
We pray they receive God’s wisdom, compassion and strength and that their decisions will be made with a heart to help people living in poverty. Please join us in praying for the new government.
A change in Prime Minister doesn’t change our mission. We must continue to campaign for positive change with boldness and amplify the voices of people living in poverty in our communities.
Proverbs 31:8–9 says: ‘Speak out for those who cannot speak, for the rights of all the destitute. Speak out, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.’
With all this in mind, this is our message to the Prime Minister and his new cabinet…
As Andy Burnham and his new ministers enter into office, CAP is calling for a commitment from him and his government to prioritise helping local households out of unmanageable debt and poverty.
As we enter this new chapter, we encourage collaboration and unity behind this mission. Through support and action from all political parties, businesses, charities, churches and individuals we can continue to see people in debt freed from hunger, fear and isolation.
We acknowledge it’s a big problem that requires big solutions but commitment and collaboration to tackling poverty from the new Prime Minister would be a real boost of hope to many.
We look forward to continuing to work with parliamentarians from all political parties to bring about the changes desperately needed to help many more households in our communities out of unmanageable debt and into a future of hope, joy and purpose.
