Find Bible verses about giving to inspire you to live as a generous Christian. See what the Bible says about giving our time and finances to those in need.

As Christmas approaches, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush of gifts and gatherings. But at the heart of the festive season is giving, not just financially, but giving of ourselves – our time, compassion and hope.

At CAP, we’ve seen how powerful generosity can be, both from amazing supporters and CAP workers in local churches who dedicate their time to help those in their communities.

Here are some Bible verses about giving to inspire you this Christmas.

Bible verses about God’s generous heart

God’s story begins with generosity, as he gave his one and only son so that we may have eternal life. That same generous giving is what God calls us to live out each day. When we give, we mirror the nature of a generous God.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

James 1:17

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

Luke 1:17

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

2 Corinthians 9:8

Bible verses about giving of our time

Not every gift comes wrapped in paper. Sometimes, the most meaningful giving is about listening and serving others, using the gifts that God has already equipped us with. We’re called to do this in 1 Peter 4:10:

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

At CAP, volunteers and supporters across the UK give in countless ways, from volunteering their time, becoming a life changer, offering prayer and serving their communities. Every act, whether small or big, points to Jesus.

One of those incredible volunteers is Keith, who’s been faithfully volunteering with CAP for over 20 years!

Volunteering at CAP has helped me to stay balanced, and I have felt more appreciated at CAP than I ever did at work. The staff at CAP are all amazing and do such a worthwhile job.

Keith’s story reminds us that giving our time can have a lifelong impact. His faithful service shows what it looks like to live out God’s love day by day.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Philippians 2:3–4

And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Hebrews 13:16

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:2

The King will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Bible verses about financial giving

Financial giving can feel small, but God uses it to do big things. It’s a way of giving a gift to someone you may never meet in person, but whose life you can still change. Every donation to CAP helps a person or family find freedom from debt, rebuild their confidence and experience God’s love in practical ways.

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians 9:6–7

Honour the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops, then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.

Proverbs 3:9–10

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 6:21

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

Bible verses about the blessings of giving

Generosity has a ripple effect. It refreshes others and also refreshes us. Every gift and prayer makes a difference, shown in Proverbs 11:25:

A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.

Being generous can also have a knock-on effect that spreads. At CAP, we see this every day, not just in lives changed, but then how they go on to help others. Jim’s story is an inspiring example. When he found himself in debt, local debt coach, Ruth, showed empathy and supported Jim to become debt free. Now, Jim extends that same empathy to others, as he has become a debt coach himself.

I have my life back now. I was feeling like a little child who has found a toy and now he wants to show and tell everyone about it.

Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Luke 12:33–34

Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice.

Psalm 112:5

Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to.
