A roundup of ways to save money and enjoy a few extra perks for over 60s. 

If you’re over 60, there are lots of discounts, benefits and freebies available that could help you save money on everyday costs. From cheaper travel and discounted days out to support with healthcare costs and energy bills, making the most of what’s available could leave you with more money in your pocket each month.

Travel

Over 60s railcard

  • What you can get: Get 1/3 off rail travel with a Senior Railcard.
  • What you need to know: A Senior Railcard costs £35 for one year, or £80 for three years, which you can buy as a digital card through the Railcard app, or as a physical card posted to you. For use during off-peak times only.

Interrail discount

  • What you can get: 10% discount on Interrail Passes
  • What you need to know: Hop on and off trains in 33 countries by showing your pass (some high-speed and night trains may need you to get an extra seat reservation). The German Rail Pass is not included. A Child Pass can be used with the Senior Pass, meaning you can bring the grandkids with you!

National Express Coachcard

  • What you can get: Save ⅓ on National Express coach tickets
  • What you need to know: A Senior Coachcard costs £30 plus £3 postage, and gives you ⅓ off Standard and Fully Flexible fares across the UK for one year. It also includes £15 day-return on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to anywhere in the UK (excluding airports), and 15% off the price of an adult Fully Flexible fare for coach travel to an event.

Older Person’s Bus Pass (England and Wales)

  • What you can get:
    • If you live in England, you can travel for free on buses when you reach the State Pension Ag with the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme.
    • If you live in London, you can travel for free when you’re 60 with a London Oyster photocard, but only within London. When you’re State Pension age you can then get a Freedom Pass for free travel across tubes/​trains/​buses in London. You can also use this for free bus travel across England.
    • If you live in Wales, you can apply for a bus pass here.

National Trust senior membership

English Heritage

  • What you can get: Senior discount on an English Heritage membership, giving unlimited access to 400 historic sites. You’ll also have access to free or discounted entry to events, as well as free child tickets, meaning you can bring the grandkids!
  • What you need to know: £6 monthly membership (monthly for 12 months by Direct Debit). Adult Members must live at the same address. Up to six kids go free with each adult.

Odeon cinema Silvers tickets

  • What you can get: £2 Silvers tickets for over 60s during quieter times of the day, including tea, coffee and biscuits.
  • What you need to know: Tickets are £2 when you book online and in the cinema, or £1.80 if you’re an Extra Plus member. See your local Odeon for Silvers showtimes.

Everyman cinema

  • What you can get: For those aged 55 and over, get a complimentary hot drink and a slice of cake, or a small popcorn during Silver Screen matinee showings
  • What you need to know: Check your local venue to see showtimes. If you’re under 55, you can still attend a showing, but refreshments are not included in the standard ticket price.

Cineworld CineSeniors

Showcase cinema

  • What you can get: Get £4.99 tickets for films starting before 4pm. You can also enjoy 15% off a Costa hot drink and snack at Bluewater, Southampton, Reading and Cardiff cinemas. Buy a Costa hot drink and get a biscuit for £1 at Nottingham, Peterborough, Liverpool, Leeds, Coventry, Teesside, Bristol, Glasgow, Paisley, Dudley, Derby and Leicester cinemas.
  • What you need to know: Tickets are £4.99 in the cinema (£7.99 at Showcase Cinema de Lux Bluewater) for all films starting before 4pm each Thursday for guests aged 60 or over. This isn’t valid in conjunction with any other offer, promotion or discount. Additional charges will apply for performances in XPlus, 3D, and XLR or Gallery seating.

The Light cinema

Make sure you also check out independent cinemas in your area as you might find some deals. A great example is in Yorkshire at The Rex in Elland, one of the oldest purpose built cinemas in the UK, where seniors go for just £5.50. You’ll get an organ performance in the interval (which is just as long as the ice cream line) and a good old Yorkshire tea in a proper mug!

Discounted theatre tickets

National Theatre

  • What you can get: £20 off midweek matinees, such as War Horse and The Story, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, The Jungle Book and more. 
  • What you need to know: The discount price is available to select when you have clicked on a seat in a seating plan. The discount is limited to two per customer, per performance. 

Royal Shakespeare Company

  • What you can get: 20% discount for those over the age of 65 for Monday and Tuesday evening performances and midweek matinees.
  • What you need to know: The offer is valid for selected performances and not available for groups of more than eight. The discount doesn’t apply to premium seats.

Winter Fuel Payment

  • What you can get: Up to £300 to help with winter energy costs.
  • What you need to know: You can be eligible if you’ve reached State Pension age by the end of the qualifying week to be eligible, as well as have an income of, or below, £35,000 a year. You may be able to get a shared payment if you’re over the state pension age but not on Pension Credit.

  • What you can get: Planning for the future doesn’t have to be complicated. With CAP’s free Will-writing service, you can create a simple, legally-binding Will with the support of our trusted partners.
  • What you need to know: Simply choose how you’d like to write your will (either in person, over the phone or online), fill in the form, connect with a trusted partner and write your will for free.

Discounted glasses at Specsavers

  • What you can get: 20% off glasses for over 60s
  • What you need to know: Offer is eligible for over 60s who buy a single pair of glasses from the £70 range or above, including frames, lenses and extras such as treatments to protect the lenses. It can’t be used in conjunction with any other offer and only includes one pair of glasses. It also excludes contact lenses and non-prescription sunglasses.

Discounted glasses at Boots

  • What you can get: 10% discount on your first pair of glasses or prescription sunglasses, plus half price for every additional pair of glasses or prescription sunglasses.
  • What you need to know: Valid on the first pair only and can be used with half price additional pairs offer but not in conjunction with any other offer or discount. This excludes the lowest full price Boots brand prescription glasses, ready-made reading glasses, re-glazes and safety eyewear.

Free prescriptions and eye tests

  • Prescriptions: Free from age 60 if you live in England, and free for all ages in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
  • Eye Tests: Free NHS-funded eye tests start at age 60 (free for all ages in Scotland).
  • Dental Work: You qualify for free NHS dental treatment if you receive Guarantee Credit (the main part of Pension Credit).

Better Health Senior Membership

Local councils and independent gyms and leisure centres near you may also offer their own discounts for seniors, so it’s worth checking your nearest gym to see what offers they have for you.
