New research: Employment

red hard hat
Insights into the role of employment in addressing UK poverty.

Work can provide people with a sense of purpose, community and financial stability. But paid employment is not always an option, and not always the golden road to better times. Mental health, physical health, caring responsibilities, disabilities and digital exclusion are just some of the barriers to entry, remaining and progression within the labour market; and even when someone is in paid employment they may not be free from being pulled into poverty.

  • 22% of UK adults in full-time employment have debt they are struggling to repay

  • 32% of UK adults working full-time say that high costs of essentials such as food and energy has caused them to have financial difficulty in the past 5 years.

  • Physical health issues are preventing 11% of UK adults from accessing higher-paid work.
