New research: The inequality of poverty

People walking in different directions
Polling reveals the disproportionate risks of poverty in the UK.

21% of UK adults report having a deficit budget. It is a real concern for society and the economy for one in every five UK adults to not have sufficient income to cover the costs of essentials. But the story becomes even more problematic when you dig behind the statistics and see the revealing story of some groups in society being at higher risk of financial difficulty than others. Despite age, gender and ethnicity being protected characteristics, the current reality is that these categories still play a significant role in someone’s risk of being pulled into debt and poverty.

  • 36% of women in the UK say they have daily anxiety about their finances (compared to 29% of men).

  • 18% of UK adults who have a white ethnicity report having a deficit budget in contrast to 45% of UK adults from other ethnic groups (Mixed, Asian, African, or other groups).

  • 38% of working class UK adults have daily anxiety about their finances in contrast to 29% of people who are middle class (using the social grade system C2DE and ABC1).
