Reflections for the fourth week of Lent, 24–30 March

Reflect on the passage

Even though they had witnessed miracle after miracle, the Israelites still did not trust in God completely. We see them quickly fall back on their own logic and beliefs, forgetting everything that God has told and shown them.

Especially in times of uncertainty, it’s easy to lean on worldly things instead of putting our full trust in God, but this will never yield the same fulfilment. As we seek to do God’s work and put an end to poverty in the UK, it’s vital that we lean on him through every success as much as any setback.

Pray for CAP

Would you join us in praying that as Christians Against Poverty – that’s all of us, including you – we would seek God’s guidance first and follow his instructions as we work together to fight UK poverty? May every action be led by the one who gave us the ability to act.

Act

Take action by setting aside some time this week – longer than you usually would – to spend with God, and only God. Find a quiet space, block out all distractions and just sit in his presence. Open your ears and listen to what he wants to say to you.

Pray for a greater focus on God’s voice

Do you ever find yourself allowing material worth, people and emotions to overpower God’s voice? If so, pray today to acknowledge and apologise for this. Ask for help in discerning the difference between his calling and the influence of the world.

Listen

Listen to the song Only You Can Satisfy (William McDowell), and reflect on the following lyrics: If I take what the world has offered I’ll have to come again, again and again / With just one drink of his living water I’ll never thirst again’.

A prayer for this week

Almighty God, you are more than enough. Nothing that the world has to offer could satisfy our hearts like you do. In times of uncertainty, fear and worry, when it becomes all too easy to lean on worldly things, help us to hold fast to this truth. Amen.
