Here are three major policy and UK Government updates that will enhance the support we provide to our clients.

It’s been a significant time for policy changes that directly affect the lives of the people we support at Christians Against Poverty. These new laws and expanded discounts are crucial, providing greater safety, financial stability and peace of mind for those struggling with debt and poverty.

1. Crucial financial relief: the Warm Home Discount expands

The annual £150 discount on energy bills is now reaching many more families who desperately need it, providing vital financial relief during the costly winter months.

The impact for CAP clients:

Wider eligibility: eligibility for the Warm Home Discount has been significantly expanded to approximately an extra 2.7 million households. For the majority of people, the £150 will be automatically deducted off their energy bill. But for some households, they’ll need to give extra information to ensure they get the discount.

Reduced anxiety: this wider net means hundreds of thousands of families are receiving confirmation of the £150 discount, delivering essential support and reducing stress related to energy costs.

2. Stability secured: the Renters’ Rights Act becomes law

The Renters’ Rights Act secures a fairer and more stable future for the estimated 11 million private renters across England. The reforms will give renters the right to end tenancies with two months’ notice. It will ban landlords and agents from refusing tenants because they have children or receive benefits, as well as allow tenants to appeal above-market rents which are designed to force them out of their homes.

The impact for CAP clients:

Greater security: the Act strengthens the position of tenants, which translates to greater stability in their lives. This reduces the risk of sudden, unexpected housing crises that often push clients deeper into debt.

Focus on the future: by promoting fairness and stability in housing, this law helps the families we support to build a more secure foundation, enabling them to focus on managing their finances and moving toward freedom from debt.

3. Safer homes guaranteed: the power of Awaab’s Law

For tenants in social housing, the introduction of Awaab’s Law marks a fundamental shift in landlord accountability and safety standards. This law ensures that housing conditions cannot fall below a safe standard.

The impact for CAP clients:

Action mandated: landlords must now adhere to strict, non-negotiable deadlines for addressing emergency hazards, ensuring clients get the quick resolution they need. Landlords will be forced to fix emergency health and safety hazards within 24 hours of reporting, and investigate significant damp and mould within ten working days of being notified.

Protection from illness: this legislation, a legacy to Awaab Ishak, directly protects vulnerable families from the health risks associated with living in unsafe, substandard housing. The law helps ensure the security and health of our clients’ homes.

Continue the fight

At CAP we will continue to work relentlessly to bring changes from Awaab’s Law to the expansion of the Warm Home Discount, to create a stronger safety net for our clients. Join our campaigner community to stay informed and help us drive the next critical policy change.
