Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is a UK-wide, church-based movement offering whole-person support to people in their toughest financial storms, such as unmanageable debt, unemployment and chronic low income. Every day, local churches are reigniting hope and sharing the love of Jesus in action. We’re committed to ending UK poverty and the despair it brings, restoring all that it has stolen.

Why work at CAP?
The work we do makes a difference. We’re a community of skilled, dedicated people driven by our Christian faith. Together we serve the UK Church, equipping it to make a real impact on UK poverty.
We pride ourselves on a fun and supportive culture, where we value you as a whole person and offer opportunities for you to grow. We’re also committed to promoting diversity and inclusion across CAP, not just because God models this to us, but because we are stronger as a result.
I love working for CAP because every day I am helping people alongside a local church and unashamedly in the name of Christ. It’s a huge privilege to have supported thousands of people to become debt free.
Josh, Senior Debt Advisor
What I love about it is that people genuinely want to look after each other. My story is that I’ve been so invested in by CAP and now I get to invest in others.
Justine, Chief People Officer
CAP employee, Miriam, speaking: I was looking for something that was a bit more meaningful than the normal nine-to-five. I wanted something that I knew could have a real impact on real people’s lives—faith in action in what I do in my everyday. My name is Miriam, and I am a Debt Advisor here at CAP.
A Debt Advisor just comes alongside someone who is really struggling in their finances and trapped by debt, and helps them to identify a way to break out of that debt. In practice, that looks like giving advice and negotiating repayment plans on their behalf.
I had little-to-no experience in debt advice before joining CAP; actually, I didn’t really know what it was, to be very honest. CAP equipped me through training in the classroom and shadowing people, breaking down exactly what arrears, debts, and mortgages were—just all sorts of training. I’m most proud of going from knowing so little to being able to be that voice of reassurance and confidence to clients who know so little themselves.
I remember one client calling in. She was just distraught—she had had her car clamped and had enforcement agents visit. She had no idea what to do. Through that call, I was able to intervene and tell her exactly what they could and couldn’t do. I prayed with her, and we were able to get that car unclamped.
The people that I’ve met here are just so friendly and amazing, and I just love the countryside. It is such a gorgeous location and a gorgeous place to be. I also love the culture of celebration that we have—celebrating people being debt-free and praying for each other and our clients. That’s just such an integral part of what we do, and it’s amazing.
For anyone out there with a heart for social justice who’s maybe looking for the next step out of uni, I would totally recommend this. You don’t need to be qualified, and you don’t need to have experience. Just bring what you’ve got, commit, and God will do the rest.
What we do
In 1996, with a small donation and big faith, the CAP journey began with John Kirkby. Since then, we’ve seen tens of thousands of families and individuals break free from debt and poverty.
Through a team of hundreds of dedicated staff members based in all four UK nations, and hundreds of incredible churches, we support the local Church to deliver CAP’s services: FCA-authorised debt help, money coaching workshops, life skills groups and job clubs.
Our impact
2026 marks CAP’s 30th anniversary. Over the years, we estimate that:
Benefits and rewards of working for CAP
At CAP, you’re never just a number. You’re a unique and talented individual, and God has brought you here for a very good reason. That’s why your wellbeing is paramount.
We all face challenges in work and in life, and as your employer we want to support you through these times as best we can. We also want to celebrate your wins – big or small – and provide opportunities for you to grow and thrive, both personally and professionally.
Our vision, mission and values
Our vision
Transformed lives. Thriving churches. An end to UK poverty. This is the world we want to see.
Our mission
CAP’s mission is to equip local churches, so that when someone who especially needs our type of face-to-face help is up against financial crisis or vulnerability, there will be a church in their community ready to walk alongside them.
We will support each church to offer reliable, practical help; the kind of help that restores someone’s financial resilience and hope for the future, and introduces them to the fullness of life that Jesus offers.
We do all this because no one should face debt and poverty alone. Lives will be restored by the steadfast presence of a local church, ready to walk alongside you during the toughest financial storms.
