    Meat

Are you a 'meat and two veg' kind of guy? Can't think of anything better than a tasty pork pie? This is your chance to prove yourself wrong! Challenge yourself and see what meat withdrawal feels like - many of our clients sadly don't have a choice.

    Branded goods

You can't beat a bit of Branston Pickle on your cheese sandwich, a scoop or three of Ben and Jerry's Phish Food, or a dollop of Hellmann's Mayonnaise on your chips (no, just us?). Branded goods don't have a place in most of our clients' cupboards - it's cheap food or no food!

    Fresh food

Tinned food for the win! A week without fresh food - that's fresh meat, fresh salad, fresh milk, fresh cakes, fresh pizza, Fresh Prince (oh, wait). And no defrosting last week's chilli con carne - that's cheating!

    Nutrition

Ever tried the lemonade and biscuit diet? Here's your chance! One of our clients lived on lemonade and biscuits before they contacted CAP because they couldn't afford anything else. None of those fancy chocolate-covered ones mind, just bog standard own-brand digestives and lemonade for a couple of days. Yum!

    Takeaways

Chinese or Indian? You've got to love a good takeaway on a Friday night! Take away your takeaways for a month and see how much you miss them - you may even find you could save yourself a bit of money. Why not donate the money you would spend on takeaways each week?

    Food

Fasting is a lot harder than it sounds - come lunch time, that hot chicken soup will be smelling better than ever and your stomach will be crying out to be fed. Literally. 70% of our clients sacrificed meals before they came to CAP. Put yourself through 48 hours without food and everytime you get a twinge of hunger, pray for our clients.

    Hot food

A delicious beef and ale stew on a winter's evening, a warm apple pie and custard, or a simple pasta dish. All rather tasty when you're hungry! Signing up for this challenge means only eating things as they come - no heating your baked beans or toasting your crumpets in the morning. A simple challenge, you may think - go on then, clever clogs!

    Go again
  • Without icon

    Alcohol

Love a cold pint with the footy on? A nice glass of red with a movie? Or maybe a fancy cocktail with the girls? Try going without any alcohol for a month and you'll be treasuring those moments a lot more.

    Go again
  • Without icon

    Caffeine

There's nothing better than a fresh coffee in the morning; it sets you up for the day! Cut out all caffeine from your diet - coffee, tea, chocolate, fizzy drinks - and see how you feel after a week. Clients often can't afford these luxuries, and they could probably do with a nice cup of tea or a Snickers more than we do!

    Go again
  • Without icon

    Shopping

You come to make a sandwich and there is no bread. What do you do? Pop down to the local supermarket, of course! When a pre-CAP client runs out of something so vital, they can't just go and buy another one. They have to live from what is already in the cupboards (70% of clients before CAP skip meals) until they can afford more food - often a week or more. Think you can stay away from the supermarket for a week? We challenge you!

    Go again
  • Without icon

    Chocolate

Reckon you could give that deliciously smooth, creamy chocolate up for a week? Really? How about for a month then, smarty pants?! Our clients often have no option but to cut out little luxuries like this to survive on their tight budgets. A toughie for the chocoholics among us!

    Go again
  • Without icon

    Make-up

Imagine a girls' night out with no eye liner, or even your favourite lippy...can you?! If the answer is a big fat 'no', really go for it - liberate yourself and attempt a make-up free week! Luxuries like these quite often have to be cut out when the debts are piling up. Put that mascara down, woman!

    Go again
  • Without icon

    Sport

Give up watching or playing any kind of sport - not just your (least) favourite. You may not think it, but sport is a bit of a luxury - some clients can't afford for their kids to play sport, let alone themselves. It's also a big part of your social life - take this aspect of it away and you'll realise just how important it is to you. The ball's in your court!

    Go again
  • Without icon

    Your birthday

You'll have to be strategic for this one - no signing up for a month in November if your birthday is in August! Why not donate your presents or birthday money to CAP so we can bless our clients on their birthdays?

    Go again
  • Without icon

    Family

We all like having a good natter with mum when something's not gone quite to plan, or a catch-up with your big brother once a week. Many pre-CAP clients isolate themselves from family through shame or embarrassment of their debts. Try a week without any family contact - a big test for the home birds and a good challenge for the students.

    Go again
  • Without icon

    Talking

Ooooft! Pretty self-explanatory - no verbal communication, only a pen and paper. Some people won't want to talk to anyone before CAP's help; they withdraw into themselves through fear and shame of debts. Only for the brave.

    Go again
  • Without icon

    Socialising

Bit of an extrovert? Try going a week without socialising and see how you feel! Before CAP, a lot of our clients had to miss out on coffee, lunch or birthday nights out with friends because they just can't afford it.

    Go again
  • Without icon

    Internet

Before contacting CAP, people living in debt and poverty rarely have internet in their home, so they can't easily check emails, see photos of Dave's new house on Facebook, or Google where in the world Six Mile Bottom is. Try it for a week and see how frustrated you become!

    Go again
  • Without icon

    Mobile Phone

Smartphone users, we're looking at you! Try going a week without your mobile phone - no calls, texts, Twitter, or Angry Birds. Many CAP clients will only have very basic phones and tight budgets mean it's hard for them to keep in touch with their friends and family.

    Go again
  • Without icon

    Emails

This might be a welcome break if you work in a busy office - no emails for 48 hours (yes, during the evening too!). You might want to run this one past your boss before signing up!

  • Without icon

    Social Media

Now this is a challenge for the tech-savvy among us! No Facebook photos, Twitter feeds, Pinterest boards, or whatever else that's out there for a whole week (or you could REALLY challenge yourself and cut yourself off for a month)! Some of our clients can't even afford an internet connection, so we're letting you off lightly with this one!

    Sleeping

OK, well maybe not for the whole week! But put yourself in the shoes of one of our clients, so stressed and worried about their situation that they cant sleep. Try it for a night and see how well you cope with life after a sleepless night.

    Go again
  • Without icon

    Space

A tricky one! Try living in just one room of your house for the week (OK we'll let you have a bathroom as well). Cramped housing and no personal space can be a real problem for many of our clients.

    Go again
  • Without icon

    A bed

Possibly the hardest one here - no bed (and we don't just mean kip in the spare one!). We're talking sofa, floor, sleeping bag, and we might let you off with a pillow.

  • Without icon

    Comfort

Take away your chairs and sofas because you're going to go a week without comfort! Imagine you had to sell your furniture so you could pay for food. This is a reality for many CAP clients. No beanbags allowed - that's cheating!

    Pay

Feeling secure? Try taking away access to your pay cheque for a week and see how you feel then! Many of our clients face delays in benefits being paid or being paid on time. TV

Put those remotes away and swap them for a good set of books. TVs are a luxury that most of us take for granted - not our clients! These are usually one of the first things to go when you are living on a budget, so take it away and see how you cope.

    Credit cards

Put our CAP Money Course principles into practice and go a week without using your credit or debit card - just your hard earned cash! Credit cards are a big no-no for our clients and, who knows, you might find that you could be saving more by spending in cash!

Clients don't have many choices - their debts manage them. Choose your decision-maker wisely!

If you're an extrovert or even a social media addict, then you're in the right place! We're all guilty of taking friends and family for granted, or even the means to communicate with them – phone, email, social media.
