Harvest is a time to pause and give thanks. Across the UK, churches, schools and communities gather to celebrate the season by sharing and donating food, singing songs of gratitude and enjoying nature.

But Harvest is about more than food. It’s a chance to recognise the many ways God provides, to remember those who are struggling financially and to pray for our communities. Use these harvest prayers to help you reflect, give thanks and bless others this season.

A prayer of gratitude at Harvest

Faithful, loving God, at harvest time I pause to remember your goodness. Thank you for the wonderful things I have: the beauty of your creation, the kindness of others and the hope you give me in every season of my life. I’m grateful for moments of joy, for the people who walk with me in life and for your love. Help me to hold onto that gratitude, even during hard times, and to share that hope with other people. Amen.

A prayer for those with empty cupboards

Compassionate God, as I celebrate a full harvest table, I remember those whose cupboards are bare. I pray for every family worried about their next meal. For parents skipping meals so their children can eat, and for anyone facing isolation and hunger on their own, I ask and pray that you’ll provide for them and bring them hope. Amen.

A Harvest prayer before a meal

Loving God, as we gather together around this table, we thank you for the hands that prepared this food. For farmers, shop workers and those who bring it to us. God, we ask that you will bless this meal to nourish our bodies and bless everyone around this table. Help us remember your love and be thankful for what we have. Amen.

A prayer for our communities

God, thank you for the towns, villages and cities that we can call our home. As we celebrate the harvest festival, we ask that you’ll help unite us all so that we can love our neighbours as ourselves. Help us look out for those who feel alone and support those who are struggling. Fill us with encouragement so that we can work together for a kinder, fairer community. Help us be generous people so that our streets can reflect your abundant love. Amen.

Autumn prayer

Dear God, thank you for the rhythm of the different seasons. Thank you for the beauty of autumn, for the changing colours, the cooler air and the harvest food gathered. As I reflect on autumn, help me to see your hand at work, both within me and in nature. Help me to fix my eyes on you so that this season can be a time of gratitude, blessings and generosity towards others. Amen.

A prayer for food banks

Lord, thank you for every volunteer and worker who keeps the food banks open. Bless those who dedicate their time to ensure that nobody in their community goes hungry or has to skip a meal. Place on people’s hearts to donate food this Harvest Festival, and encourage those worried about asking for help to contact their local food bank and take the first step to get support. Help our community to strive for a society where nobody should go without food. Amen.

Opening prayer for a harvest service

Jesus, you fed the hungry crowds with your overwhelming generous heart. Inspire your Church this Harvest Festival to be generous in love. Help us all go beyond our normal routine church service, and start a fire within us to move us into action to help those in need. Make our congregation more than a building of people, but a family of brothers and sisters that welcomes everyone with open arms. Encourage us to use our spiritual gifts in unique ways so that nobody in our community is forgotten, and everyone finds hope through you. Amen.

A harvest prayer for kids

Dear God, thank you for the world you made, for apples, carrots, bread and milk, and for all the people who help to grow and make our favourite foods. Please help us to remember those who don’t have enough to eat and share what we can with others. Amen
