Matthew 5:14 meaning: The light of the world and the city on a hill

There aren’t many verses in the Bible as familiar as Matthew 5:14. Whether you’ve heard it in your local church, seen it represented in the media, or spent time reflecting on it with CAP at New Wine, Jesus’ words continue to capture our attention in today’s society. But familiarity can sometimes stop us from pausing to reflect deeper on what’s being said. 

This verse isn’t just an encouragement, but a call to action. Jesus is showing his followers who they are, what God’s kingdom looks like and how to live faithfully. By understanding Jesus’ words here, we can also learn how to apply them to our own lives today.

Matthew 5 sits within the Sermon on the Mount in the Bible, where Jesus paints a picture of life in the kingdom of God. He begins with the Beatitudes, describing those who are blessed: the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the merciful, the peacemakers and those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. (Matthew 5:3–10)

Those who were listening were not the people the world might naturally think of as influential or successful. They were ordinary people: fishermen, laborers, families and farmers learning what it means to follow Jesus. To these people, Jesus says: 

It would’ve been an extraordinary thing to hear. No matter who they thought they were, how ordinary they felt or their lack of worldly influence, Jesus looked at them and called them the light of the world.

That tells us something important about the Christian life. Jesus calls his followers to live in such a way that his transforming work becomes visible to others, as we follow a God who is the light of the world.

Jesus could have chosen countless images to describe his followers that day. Instead, he chose a town built on a hill. This is easily recognisable: as darkness falls, lamps burning throughout a hilltop town would make it visible across the landscape, and represents something that can’t be hidden.

Along with the lamp on the stand, both images reinforce the same point: genuine discipleship is visible. It’s not about being performative or drawing attention to ourselves, but about lives transformed by God that naturally become impossible to conceal:

Jesus then explains that our lives don’t point to ourselves, but to God who transforms us:

Jesus isn’t listing three separate ideas here: he’s building one complete thought. He starts with who we are (the light), shows what we look like (a city on a hill), and ends with what we’re meant to do (a lamp on a stand), so that our lives lead people back to God.

Because Jesus was speaking to ordinary people, just like you and me, being the light of the world looks more simple than you might think. 

It could look like: 

• Choosing compassion and grace, even when it’s easier to walk away or feel a deep sense of anger
• Welcoming someone who might feel overlooked
• Praying faithfully and with boldness
• Forgiving someone, even when it feels difficult 
• Giving generously of finances and time
• Selflessly serving others in your local community 

One of the most interesting parts of Matthew 5:14 is that Jesus doesn’t describe Christians as a singular light standing on a hill. He describes a town built on a hill. This doesn’t mean we stand alone, but as Christians, we stand as a community whose lives make the goodness of God visible. We are called to stand together, becoming visible as an expression of God’s love.

Our actions give authenticity to our words and our words explain our actions. This integrated, lived-out expression of the good news is what it means to be the light of the world, a city on a hill, a lamp on a stand. 

The mission of God’s people is to demonstrate the good news in what we do and what we say. When God’s people live out his heart for others, his light becomes visible: through each local church providing free packed lunches in the holidays, for every local debt coach praying for clients at their appointment, through every young person and family supported. They become a city of light that cannot be hidden.

Jesus’ invitation to be the light of the world is as relevant today as it was on the hillside in Galilee. As Christians, praying together can embody the city of light. We believe in the power of prayer, that it can bring hope to dark places and lift up those who are burdened by debt and poverty.
