Thanks for chatting with us, Graeme. Can you tell us what inspired you to join CAP and what your role involves?
I’m delighted to join CAP, to draw on my experience to tell stories of transformation and enable us all to tackle UK poverty together. As Chief Mission Officer, I’m helping build a movement of Christians who recognise that poverty has no place in the kingdom of God.
It’s amazing to know that thousands of lives have been transformed through local churches who are supported by CAP, and that we can all get involved. I’m excited to look at how churches are serving their communities and how we can support them.
Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself?
I grew up in Northern Ireland, then moved to Scotland to study Social Policy at university. I met my wife Barbara there, and we live just outside Glasgow with our three children. In my spare time, I’m a keen reader and runner – I’ve done 230 parkruns, several half marathons and four marathons!
How has your work background prepared you for this role?
I joined CAP from Tearfund, where I was Head of Church and Supporter Engagement, helping churches in the UK engage with mission overseas. Before this, I’d completed two Masters, one in Community Development and one in Biblical Interpretation, which helped me understand the Bible through a historical and contemporary lens and learn how to address issues to improve people’s quality of life. I’ve got lots of experience helping local churches bring hope in areas of poverty, in different settings.
How do you see local churches partnering with CAP to make a greater impact in their communities?
CAP’s calling is to support and equip local churches as they outwork their God-given mission to serve those in need. We have many resources for churches to help them respond to local needs, evangelise and share the good news of Jesus. We work closely with churches as they focus on transforming the whole person, from people’s finances to relationships, spiritual lives and discovering their own value as children of God.
For the kingdom of God is… righteousness, joy and peace in the Holy Spirit.
Graeme’s favourite Bible verse, Romans 14:17
How can supporters help tackle UK poverty?
CAP is not just ‘those employed by CAP’ or ‘those who are getting support’, but a movement of Christians who are against poverty. That includes everyone involved, whether that be through prayer, financial giving or campaigning. We all have a role to play in transforming lives, equipping churches to thrive and ending UK poverty.
Across the UK, we know that the need is large, especially because of more complex issues such as low incomes and the cost of living. We’d kindly ask that you pray as we offer more support to the most vulnerable.
