With a network of services across Scotland, the upcoming Holyrood elections on 7 May mark a key moment for our CAP Scotland team’s focus on child poverty.
We all want to live in a Scotland where every child has the chance to thrive, yet as we head to the polls on May 7th, the reality is that one in four of our youngest citizens is still waiting for that promise to become a reality. For these families, the upcoming elections in May are not just about politics, they are about finding a path toward a brighter, more secure future.
Gordon Cheung, Scotland National Leader, Christians Against Poverty
Recent figures show that nearly 24% of Scottish children remain trapped in poverty. Behind that statistic are thousands of families in our communities who are struggling to afford the most basic necessities.
At CAP Scotland we know that stopping poverty is possible. We see the solution in action every day as our local church partners walk hand-in-hand with families, offering a way out when they feel most alone. Visiting many of our CAP debt centres — across cities including Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen and on into the Highlands — we aren’t just clearing bills; we’re helping families gain tools and build resilience.
There is a common myth that the biggest decisions affecting our wallets only happen at Westminster. The reality is that for a family in Scotland, this Holyrood election will likely have a far greater impact on their daily lives. The Scottish Parliament holds the levers for many of the most vital support systems, from the Scottish Child Payment to housing and local service funding. The MSPs we elect on May 7th are the ones who will determine whether we meet those 2030 targets or whether they become a broken promise.
Because of this power in people’s hands this May, I want every voter in Scotland to feel equipped to challenge their representatives. Use your voice! When candidates knock on your door or appear at hustings, ask them: “What is your specific plan to meet our 2030 child poverty targets?”
But while I will be joining my fellow Scots at the ballot box, the cold homes, the empty fridges, the worried faces I’ve witnessed across our nation, tells me that many families also need help right now. So I have a message of hope if you are struggling — there is help! If you are feeling the pressure, there are practical steps you can take today to strengthen your financial position.
First, ensure you are receiving everything you are entitled to; use a free benefits calculator (like the one at capuk.org/calculator) to check your eligibility. Second, explore council tax reductions if you are on a low income, and look into utility grants that many energy and water companies offer to customers in hardship. Finally, if debt is becoming unmanageable, seek professional, free advice. At CAP, we offer face-to-face support and additional help such as money coaching designed to help you regain control of your finances.
Imagine a Scotland where every child has what they need to reach their potential. Where communities are thriving and no one faces the crushing fear of debt alone. I truly believe that this vision is within our reach, but it requires both political will and community action.
On May 7th, let’s vote for a Scotland that keeps its promises. I want to encourage people to go to hustings where your MSP candidates are laying out their plans, share your concerns, tag them on social media, and let’s make poverty stop with us!
