For many, Christmas is a time of joy and plenty. But what about those facing debt and poverty, for whom the season is marked by hardship and struggle? The promise of great joy to all people can ring hollow for those navigating a financial wilderness with no guiding star to lead them.

This Advent, we offer a timely and practical resource designed specifically for church leadership and ministry teams. It centres on the heart of the Christmas story: Jesus coming into our world as a vulnerable baby, born into humble circumstances. By choosing to be born into scarcity, he shows that God is not a distant king, but one who knows our deepest needs and brings hope to the places we need it most. The resource’s purpose is to integrate a message of humility and hope into your church’s Advent services and small group material, by:

  • Connecting the spiritual significance of Advent with the real-world financial pressures many families face
  • Encouraging your church to explore what tangible outreach and action looks like for them
  • Providing a counter-narrative to consumerist mentality that can dominate the Christmas season, reminding everyone that God’s hope is visible in times of scarcity and struggle

This Advent church resource centres on Jesus, revealed through the themes of:

  • Jesus, our hope (Sunday 30 November 2025)
  • Jesus, our peace (Sunday 7 December 2025)
  • Jesus, our joy (Sunday 14 December 2025)
  • Jesus, our love (Sunday 21 December 2025)

What does the resource include?

We’ve designed a four-week series of reflections that connects the Advent narrative with contemporary experiences of UK poverty and what we understand as our biblical mandate. Each reflection is designed to be used for each of the four Sundays of Advent, whilst being adaptable for other church settings, such as:

  • Blessed thought in a staff meeting
  • Meeting openings for ministry leads or volunteer teams
  • Church prayer meetings

Your church’s Christmas collection

Would you consider making CAP your church’s chosen charity for its Christmas collection?

When Jade’s local church, working in partnership with CAP, came alongside her, they did more than just help her get out of debt. The church’s immediate action, facilitated by CAP’s emergency food aid scheme, gave Jade the dignity of providing for her children with healthy, nutritious food—a crucial step whilst they worked on finding a lasting solution to Jade’s debt crisis.

Through every act of kindness from the people at Holy Trinity Church, Jade began to discover a God who loves her and her family unconditionally – and her life is forever changed.

I’m actually looking forward to Christmas this year – I can’t wait to celebrate Jesus’ birth with my children, free from worry.
