CAP welcomes the draft strategy. Publication of a draft strategy, after many years of waiting, is a positive step forward. CAP commends the Executive for this and wants to work with all the Executive parties to achieve the stated vision. In particular, from the introduction to the document, we welcomed:

  • the strategy’s stated vision to eradicate poverty in NI, which is in line with our own vision
  • the recognition of the cross-cutting nature and the many wide impacts of poverty on many aspects of life
  • and the need for cross Executive, and wider, collaboration

We did, however, ask the question as to whether this draft document adequately addresses the many issues highlighted therein and the many impacts of poverty in Northern Ireland. We thought the draft, although it has a laudable vision, lacked aspiration and too often suggested minor changes rather than bolder actions. We suggested a number of positive changes and also encouraged the Executive to develop targets and tangible goals to ensure that the strategy is outworked in an effective and timely manner to achieve results.
