During Talk Money Week, UK debt and budgeting help charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is rolling out brand new budgeting resources for 9–11 year olds and 14–16 year olds which can be used by parents, in schools and community groups.
Christians Against Poverty believes in the importance of teaching kids how to manage their money, as learning how to build and manage a budget provides a solid foundation for a financially secure future. Talking about money with family or someone we trust helps alleviate stress and financial worries, leading us to make better financial decisions in life.
Not only do local CAP centres offer free debt advice, money coaching, life skills groups and job clubs, they also have free budgeting resources available that can benefit everyone, equipping people with the skills and resources to gain greater financial confidence and take control of their money.
CAP is passionate about helping local families, and supporting parents and providing them with new budgeting materials for 9–11 year olds and 14–16 year olds so that they can feel empowered to educate their children is essential for investing into future generations.
One parent who used CAP’s new Money for 14–16 year olds said, “We’re acutely aware that as our teenage girls are getting older, we need to prepare them for more than just how to spend the small amount of pocket money that they get each week.
“These materials have enabled us to open up the conversation about things like the consequences and dangers of getting into debt, alongside the benefits and rewards of saving for the future. We went through the resources as a family – it took just over an hour, was a fun experience and encouraged us to talk about a subject that can sometimes be a little awkward.
“Our 15 year old particularly enjoyed working through the budgeting spreadsheet and planning her finances in preparation for when she starts earning money for herself.” Families are facing a lot of financial pressure and with the Christmas season vastly approaching they need support, which is why CAP will be launching a winter emergency appeal to provide families and individuals with free debt advice, budgeting support and emergency aid, such as energy top ups and food, for those in crisis.
Visit capuk.org/help to find out more about the free help CAP offers and capuk.org/winter to donate and help provide an emergency energy top up or food shop and free debt advice to a family living in poverty this Christmas.
This year CAP’s Christmas Appeal is focused on providing emergency aid for families facing a tough winter, so people can also donate to the appeal via capuk.org/winter.
