Below you can find our full submission to the Child Poverty Unit. We provided insights about the realities of poverty to help in the development cross-government child poverty strategy to reduce and alleviate child poverty which is due to be published in spring 2025.
Main points we raised:
- We highlighted that low income from wages and social security is the main driver of child poverty.
- We raised our research findings that found that families with children are more likely to be struggling to afford essentials and go into debt.
- We recommended a number of policy changes to reduce child poverty including removing the two child limit on benefits, increasing wages and social security payments, and reducing the cost of essentials.
- We also highlighted the value of local community support in helping families cope with financial difficulties.
